Emilia finished up scrubbing herself off in a small aluminum wash tub, which she would share with the Kommandantâs second maid, Friede, a tall woman well into her forties. Her new uniform, which consisted of a simple black dress and a white apron, lay on her new bed â a small cot with a thin mattress and even a real pillow. Emilia found that she could not stop smiling from the moment that she stepped through the doors of the small, closet-size room that was going to become her new living quarters together with the second maid. After the filthy barrack and a wooden bunk this small but clean room with an actual bed, and even a basin, seemed like the most luxurious palace apartment to her.
Emilia giggled, washing the soap off her hair, not believing that she would actually be able to wash herself every day, fix her hair in front of the small mirror, and brush her teeth with a real toothbrush â even if it was one that was left from the dead maid, but the camp had taught Emilia not to be picky a long time ago.
When she first saw herself in the small cloudy mirror right after she stepped out of the wash tub, she sighed softly, observing her nose, which was still a bit swollen, with a small bump on its bridge now â definitely evidence that it had been broken. The cut right below her left brow was healing nicely and was barely visible, while her lips would look just fine in a day or so. I am lucky they didnât break my teeth at least, Emilia thought and went on to brush her hair â also with a late maidâs hairbrush.
âYou better stay in the kitchen today,â Friede said, as soon as they were left alone, nodding at Emiliaâs face. âIâll serve food to Herr Kommandant alone today, so there is no risk of him asking you unnecessary questions.â
âIs he⦠a strict man?â Emilia asked tentatively.
âWho? Herr Kommandant?â Friede raised her brow. âNo, not at all. Heâs a very nice man, well⦠for a camp Kommandant, that is. Itâs his aide, thatâs who⦠Oh, well, youâll see for yourself in time.â
âIs it that man who brought me here?â Emilia caught Friedeâs arm before she could leave. Life had taught her to be constantly on guard and she preferred to have as much information as possible on her hands. âHeâs Herr Kommandantâs first adjutant, isnât he?â
âYes, he is. Untersturmführer Engel. I couldnât think of a least fitting name for him than that,â Friede muttered quietly, alluding to his name â âangelâ â and left Emilia alone.
For the rest of day she didnât have much time to be immersed in her brooding. Since Friede needed to do all the chores around the house, in order to shelter Emilia from the Kommandantâs eyes until her bruises had completely healed, Emilia was kept busy in the kitchen, cooking, washing the dishes and scrubbing the floors.
âAlways mind the floors,â Friede had instructed her.
